What is UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices?

UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices is an overall program that supports UPS’s health care strategy. This program provides you with a guided, self-help program that will empower you and your dependents with health care education, quality evidence-based medical information and decision-support tools for making informed health care decisions leading to the most desired patient outcomes. This program will be comprised of various components – all of which support UPS's long-term initiative to maximize value, improve health and productivity, provide high quality health outcomes, and sustain cost over time.

The program has three main components:

  • UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices Web site
Offers all eligible participants valuable health information and tools to improve health and wellness.
  • UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices Health Coaches
This program offers eligible participants help in developing individualized plans for early intervention through focused outreach. Health coaches, who are employees of the health plan claim administrators, can assist participants with information regarding their health risk factors, acute and chronic conditions, and opportunities for improving their overall health outcomes. • UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices Enhanced Case Managers
When an enhanced case manager is notified by you or your health carrier that you have a scheduled hospital admission, they may contact you to help you prepare for your procedure, answer any questions and ensure a smooth recovery.

In strict accordance with UPS’ Notice of Health Plans Privacy Practice and federal and state laws, the UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices program is confidentially administered by your health plan.

Why is UPS offering this new program?

The health and well-being of employees is a priority with UPS. UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices is an initiative that supports UPS’s health care strategy to improve employees’ health by providing UPS people and their covered dependents valuable resources and tools.

Long-term chronic health conditions can be overwhelming and stressful. Health coaches who are health care professionals with years of experience working with individuals with risk factor and health conditions can offer support and guidance to those seeking information and treatment. Studies show a personalized outreach program can help those individuals dealing with chronic conditions achieve better levels of health and more fulfilling lifestyles.

Is UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices available to all UPS employees?

UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices is available to employees and covered dependents, and to pre-age 65 retirees and their covered dependents enrolled in a UPS-administered health care plan.
Within the population described above, UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices health coaches are available to those individuals identified for outreach – meaning those participants whose health data indicates a chronic or at-risk condition who are shown to need support beyond the actions they are currently taking to manage their health. These identified individuals, who can best be supported by one-to-one assistance of a coach, will be personally contacted by a health coach.

Through the Condition Management program, you can also request that a health coach contact you directly. For more information about this opportunity, click here.

Has the UPS Healthy Connections-Informed Choices program been covered with union leadership?

Yes. The program was covered with union leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), and the Independent Pilots Association (IPA).

Are there plans to include the union-represented employees who have health care benefits from a Multi-Employer Trust plan (MET)?

No. Since UPS does not sponsor or administer these plans, we do not have the opportunity to extend this program to UPS employees, retirees and covered dependents whose health care is provided through a MET. Any decision to make a care management program available to MET plan participants is at the sole discretion of the Trust.

Will this program cost me extra?

No. Participation in UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices is a benefit provided at no additional cost.

What other resources are available to me regarding this program?

Currently, the UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices program offers access to health coaches and online informational resources via this Web site. The UPS Healthy Connections - Informed Choices Web site can link you to other health-related resources offered within UPS’s benefit package – such as the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or Work Life services.

Doesn't a program like this violate health privacy laws?

No. UPS understands that medical information is personal and protected by a federal law, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and various state laws. These laws require that health plans and health care providers protect the privacy of certain medical information. Your medical information is held in the strictest confidence within the Healthy Connections - Informed Choices program, the health plan privacy polices and federal and state laws.
